Acronym for the high precision parallax
collecting satellite launched by the European
Space Agency in Aug 1989. Named after the
Greek astronomer Hipparchus, it is the
world's first astronometry satellite designed
to provide the first measurements of the
positions and apparent motions of stars from
space. The accuracy of these measurements
will be far greater than from ground-based
telescopes. However, because of engine
failure, Hipparchos is making more limited
orbits than had been planned, which may
restrict the data it is able to provide.
