  1. Acronym for the high precision parallax
  2. collecting satellite launched by the European
  3. Space Agency in Aug 1989. Named after the
  4. Greek astronomer Hipparchus, it is the
  5. world's first astronometry satellite designed
  6. to provide the first measurements of the
  7. positions and apparent motions of stars from
  8. space. The accuracy of these measurements
  9. will be far greater than from ground-based
  10. telescopes. However, because of engine
  11. failure, Hipparchos is making more limited
  12. orbits than had been planned, which may
  13. restrict the data it is able to provide.
